🌱 Willoughby Farm Biochar Program
Feeding the soil, not the landfill
What is Biochar?
Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich charcoal produced by pyrolysis—heating organic biomass like wood, agricultural waste, or manure in low-oxygen environments. Used in agriculture to improve soil fertility, water retention, and nutrient absorption, it also serves as a long-term carbon sequestration tool to combat climate change.
🌱 Research at Willoughby Farm
Improving Soil Health & Nutrient Management
Willoughby Farm has received grant funding from the Illinois Farm Bureau to conduct agricultural research focused on building healthier soils and reducing nutrient loss.
🔬 Research Project
Biochar & Manure Study
This project explores how adding biochar (made from recycled woody and yard waste) to manure may:
-
Reduce nitrogen loss
-
Improve nutrient retention for crops
-
Support beneficial soil microbes
🎯 Project Goal
To determine if biochar helps retain more plant-available nitrogen during composting while improving overall soil health.
🌎 Why It Matters
Nitrogen loss is a major economic and environmental challenge in Illinois agriculture. Biochar shows promise as a climate-smart solution by:
-
Capturing nutrients
-
Reducing environmental impacts
-
Turning organic waste into a valuable soil amendment
