Summit Reconstruction Project Delayed Until 2027 (Update 7/13/2026)
Post Date:07/13/2026You may have noticed construction has paused on the Summit Avenue Reconstruction Project – and we realize there is a lot of information circulating about this project.
The City would like to confirm that the project is postponed until next year.
As construction began, the contractors identified significant utility conflicts in the third-party designed plans between the proposed storm sewer improvements and the existing water main on Summit Avenue, placing these key pieces of infrastructure too close together to properly construct.
Resolving these conflicts will require working with the engineering firm, substantial utility relocation and additional permits from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), making it necessary to postpone construction until next year.
Construction is anticipated to begin during the first half of 2027, with the earliest possible start being January 2027. At this time, an official start date has not been established. Once utility relocation has been completed and the contractor has submitted an approved construction schedule to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the City will provide additional notification to residents within the project limits.
Within the coming weeks, City staff will work to restore areas that were impacted by preparation of the project.
We understand this delay is disappointing and apologize for the inconvenience. The City remains committed to completing the Summit Avenue Reconstruction Project as efficiently as possible and anticipates completing construction by the end of summer 2027.
