Progress Continues on Clay Street Pedestrian Improvements Project (Update 6/2/2026)

Post Date:06/02/2026
Progress continues on the Clay Street Pedestrian Improvement Project, which includes constructing bump-outs at the corners of the intersections along Clay Street from Morrison Avenue to Seminary Street, along with widening the curb ramps along the north side of Clay Street to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.

Per Public Works Director Troy Turner:

"The sidewalk work is complete at the following intersections:
✅ Northwest Quadrant of Morrison and Clay
✅ Northwest Quadrant of Seminary and Clay
✅ Northeast Quadrant of Seminary and Clay

The storm sewer structures that Hank’s needs have come in, so Hank's expects to finish the following intersection quadrants this week:
🦺 Southwest Quadrant of Center and Clay
🦺 Southwest Quadrant of Morrison and Clay

Hank’s has received the storm sewer structure they need for the Southeast Quadrant of Center and Clay, but will likely get this done next week because the electrical conduit needs to be replaced and the electric handhole needs to be relocated.

Hank’s expects to receive the trough grates this week, so they can finish the following intersection quadrants next week:
🚧 Southwest Quadrant of Seminary and Clay
🚧 Southeast Quadrant of Seminary and Clay
🚧 Northwest Quadrant of Clinton and Clay

The City is currently awaiting a special structure from AT&T to complete the Northeast Quadrant of Clinton and Clay."

The City has received a revised schedule from Hank’s that shows the project being completed by July 22nd, weather dependent. Hank's is currently working on opening the intersections that they can prior to the upcoming Horseradish Festival, Juneteenth Festival, World’s Largest Catsup Bottle Festival and Great Race.

For additional clarification:
🚫 No parking spaces are anticipated to be lost as part of the project.
🚫 Clay Street will not be reduced to a single lane of traffic following the completion of the project.

These enhancements follow the adoption of the City's Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan, which can be viewed by clicking here.

When traveling through construction areas, please follow all posted signage, obey flagger instructions and use caution to ensure the safety of both motorists and construction personnel.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as these improvements are being made – and, as always, #LoveWhereYouLive!
